Letters, 1697-1705.

Retained copies of Southack's outgoing correspondence interleaved in the pages of the "English Pilot. Fourth Book" (London, 1689) which contains navigational maps of North America and the West Indies. Southack's letters were written to Joseph Dudley and others from the Mass. ship Province Galley in ports and off the coast of New England where he was serving in an official capacity for the colony of Mass. Bay to protect the New England coast. Among the topics discussed are regular encounters with the Indians, including trade and treaties; the capture and disposition of prisoners; and accounts of his voyages. The letters are not in chronological order.
